We all want to be better versions of ourselves — physically, emotionally, psychologically or spiritually. I’d reached a point in both my professional and personal life where I’d started questioning my interactions: why people responded to me the way they did, and why the same patterns kept repeating around me.
I broke it down into what I could do for myself, physically and psychologically. The gym solved the physical side. The rest was more of an odyssey — searching online for the right kind of talk therapy. Counsellor? Psychoanalytic or psychodynamic therapist? How many qualifications is ‘enough’? Will they actually get me?
I went through three or four different professionals and got pretty fed up with the process. Then a colleague recommended Olivia, a coaching psychologist, not a therapist or counsellor. I was sceptical at first, but her background spoke for itself: genuine international experience, working across a huge range of coaching and teaching roles with very different people.
Olivia connected with my story in a straightforward way, where others had overcomplicated it. She’s direct but never judgemental, and she helped me see my issues as something to work with and learn from, rather than a problem to eliminate.
Over several months, I’ve come to understand my imposter syndrome, why I self-sabotage in certain situations, and how my formative years shaped both my professional and personal relationships, all through evidence-based psychology combined with Olivia’s own insight and experience.
I still carry some of what I came in with, but it’s a far lighter load than when I started. I can step back and understand my own thoughts and behaviour, where before I’d just have been confused by them. I feel freer to be me.
